Welcome to Neurodivergent Therapeutic Support

Neurodivergent Therapeutic Support is a not-for-profit company set up by myself, Sue Coombes.

I have over 25 years' experience working with complex neurodivergent children and young people, specialising in those with a PDA profile, trauma and/or other mental health issues; providing support to both them and their families.

For nearly 15 years I worked as a support worker, class teacher and music specialist at an Autism Specialist School that was set up by Elizabeth Newson, the psychologist who first identified the group of children with an atypical autistic profile and who named this profile Pathological Demand Avoidance.

I set up and ran a successful therapeutic Alternative Provision for 14 years, where we worked with children who were unable to cope with mainstream or special school environments through Equine Facilitated approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of therapies do you offer?

I offer a range of therapeutic approaches tailored to the individual needs of each child or young person. These include ecotherapy, therapeutic use of the arts, animal assisted therapy, integrative counselling, sensory integration, mindfulness and positive psychology.

My approach is underpinned by the principle of 'Unconditional Positive Regard' as described by Carl Rogers.

I aim to create an environment where each child is able to feel safe in order to explore their strengths as well as areas they need support with, and to identify what would help them with their difficulties.

How long are the counseling sessions?

Counseling sessions typically last for 60 minutes, but the duration can be adjusted based on the child's needs.

For sessions in the woodland this includes the 5 - 10 minutes drive to the site. This time has proved invaluable as a gentle transition into the session: catching up on the past week, planning the session together; and then out of the session: rounding up the work and thinking about the coming week.

Do you offer support for parents and caregivers?

Yes, I provide support and guidance to parents and caregivers to help them better understand and support their neurodivergent children.

These can be online or in the home.

I am also happy to support parenta and carers in meetings with professionals and will provide reports for an additional fee.

What are your qualifications?

I am a qualified teacher and BACP registered child counsellor(https://www.bacp.co.uk/therapists/377351/sue-coombes/nottingham-ng12)

My counselling training was at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (https://artspsychotherapy.org/about-iate/)
